What you REALLY earn on Vinted: revenue vs profit
"This month I made โฌ300 on Vinted!" Great. But how much of it actually stayed in your pocket? If you can't answer to the cent, this guide is for you: the difference between revenue and profit is exactly why so many sellers work a lot and earn little.
Revenue is only the start
On Vinted the buyer pays buyer protection and usually shipping, so the amount you collect looks "full". It feels like all profit. It isn't. From your revenue you have to subtract:
- The cost of the item โ what you'd paid for it (or what you paid to resell it);
- Packaging โ mailers, tape, boxes: cents that across 100 sales add up to tens of euros;
- Shipping extras โ when the parcel exceeds the declared size, you pay the difference;
- Returns and surprises โ the odd return happens, and it almost always costs you;
- Your time โ photos, description, messages, packing, drop-off point. It isn't an accounting line, but if it takes you 40 minutes a sale you'll want to know.
A worked example
You sell a hoodie for โฌ18:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Revenue | +โฌ18.00 |
| Cost of the hoodie (bought as stock) | โโฌ7.00 |
| Mailer + tape | โโฌ0.60 |
| Net profit | +โฌ10.40 |
42% of the revenue wasn't profit. On a single sale you don't notice; across a hundred sales that's โฌ760 of difference between what you think you earned and what you actually earned.
The two mistakes almost everyone makes
- Looking only at the Vinted balance. The balance adds up your revenue: it doesn't know what you paid for the goods. It's the most misleading metric there is.
- Doing the maths "at month-end, from memory". After thirty sales you no longer remember what you paid for that pair of jeans. The margin has to be written down at the moment you sell, or it's lost.
The right method (with any tool)
One rule: every sale recorded immediately, with three numbers โ revenue, cost of the item, extra costs. Everything else (averages, trends, which categories pay best, seasonality) works itself out if the data is there. You can do it on paper, in Excel or with a dedicated tool: what matters is doing it every time. On how to choose the tool we wrote an honest guide.
VintPro does exactly this: you record the sale in seconds while you're on Vinted, and net profit, trends and top categories update on their own. The data stays yours, on your own cloud.
